“Allergic to allergies” – a new tool to combat ragweed

The Croatian Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology of the Croatian Medical Association presented the public health action "Allergic to allergies". The aim of the campaign is to alleviate problems arising from exposure to the most widespread allergen, ragweed, for those citizens who suffer from allergies. The public health action "Allergic to allergies" of the Croatian Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology is supported by JGL as a partner.

"Allergies affect more than thirty percent of the population, and as many as twenty-five percent of young people have an allergic disease, which means that, only in Croatia, more than 1.2 million people suffer from the effects of exposure to allergens," said Asja Stipić Marković, MD, PhD, president of the Croatian Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology.

The Director of the Special Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases, Marinko Artuković, MD, reminded that ragweed pollen is one of the strongest known allergens: "Pollen may cause allergic reactions on mucous membranes of the respiratory organs of sensitive patients. Typical symptoms include eye redness, tearing, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, shortness of breath, asthma and skin changes."

Due to health consequences of exposure to ragweed pollen, the Croatian Society for Allergology, with the support of JGL, decided to develop an application for mobile phones called "Allergic" as a part of the action "Allergic to allergies". The application allows users to take pictures and report ragweed habitats, which will then be reported to competent local and regional governments.

Smartphone users can download the application on Android and iOS platforms and install it on their devices for free. The application is very easy to use - a user simply takes a photo of the area with ragweed and the application adds the photograph with the exact geolocation to the map. Each user of the "Allergic" application to report ten locations receives a gift package from JGL with products Aqua Maris 4Allergy, Vizol S Allergy and Pantexol Repair. All photos of locations with ragweed will be visible in the application and on the interactive map of Croatia published on the official website of the campaign - alergicni.com.

In addition, on the page www.alergicni.com users can find interesting information about allergies, news on the fight against ragweed, pollen calendar, as well as information on JGL products from lines of Aqua Maris, Vizol S, Pantexol and Normia that help in the fight against symptoms of allergies.
