JGL becomes the first Croatian pharmaceutical company with the ISO 50001 certificate

JGL is the first pharmaceutical company in Croatia certified according to ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System. After ISO 22000:2005, 9001:2008 and 13485:2012, this is the fourth consecutive norm that has been integrated into the business of JGL d.d., and the first at the level of the Group that has been implemented, in addition to JGL d.d., into its subsidiary Adrialab d.o.o.

"ISO 50001 supplements and improves management processes that JGL has already implemented through the use of quality system and food safety standards. By implementing ISO 50001:2011, we will not only reduce our environmental impact, but also rationalize the use of energy sources and ensure long-term business sustainability and competitiveness," said Mate Poropat, executive director for pharmaceutical and technical operations at JGL.

JGL has been preparing for the introduction of ISO 50001:2011 during the planning and design phase of the Pharma Valley complex at Svilno 2. Many environmental protection solutions, departing from the current practice and surpassing the legally prescribed requirements, were implemented in the construction of the new production facilities. These include the installation of a ventilation system in clean rooms with the free cooling system, which controls the use of fresh outdoor air depending on the temperature, and a power plant with a highly efficient cooling tower. All this enables annual energy savings of HRK 2.5 million, or 3,641 MW/h, which represents a significantly lower CO2 emission in the amount of 855 tonnes per year.

JGL continuously implements the principles of social responsibility in its business and, in interaction with other stakeholders, it aims to set an example and contribute to the harmonisation of its own long-term growth and development with the environmental development. The fundamental commitment of JGL Group to energy management is the achievement of quantifiable savings in the use and consumption of energy sources.

Together with the consulting firm Šušnić d.o.o., JGL's project team designed the entire JGL's energy management system and defined general energy-related goals of JGL Group:

  • Permanent control over energy losses in development, control and distribution through the implementation of preventive methods for network maintenance and investments in the entire system;
  • Ensuring the availability of information and data, continuous improvement of methods for the analysis of data on energy source consumption (electrical energy, water, fuel, gas), and recognizing opportunities and implementing activities for the improvement of energy performance;
  • Permanently raising awareness on the importance of energy efficiency among all users;
  • Procurement of energy efficient machines, devices and vehicles, and energy services;
  • Taking energy efficiency into account when it comes to design, upgrades and modernization;
  • Continuous energy management system improvement in accordance with the requirements of ISO 50001:2011;
  • Permanent harmonization and intention of surpassing legal and other requirements in the field of energy management, and in all other areas applicable to our business.

In accordance with the global standard for energy efficiency management, the energy management system of JGL Group was certified by the Bureau Veritas certification body.

JGL issues its eighth Sustainable Development Report for 2015

JGL's efforts in the field of corporate social responsibility, with a special emphasis on environmental protection, have recently been confirmed by the Croatian Business Council for Sustainable Development (HR BCSD), which accepted the company's eighth Sustainable Development Report.

In its opinion, the HR BCSD Management Board states that "it is visible that, in the past period, JGL has implemented a series of successful activities with the aim of improving business, reducing its environmental impact, and accomplishing positive impacts on the society. Its most valuable endeavour is the investment in new facilities and moving the production to Pharma Valley, resulting not only in greater flexibility and increased price competitiveness, but also in the better usability of energy and resources and consequently reducing the negative impact on the environment. Some of the benefits include the use of technological waste water for watering, the installation of solar systems for heating water, and the use of LED lighting. The principle of balance has once again been applied in the creation of this year's report, with the quantity and diversity of information offering a broad view of business activities and impacts on the environment and society, and pointing to the responsible attitude of JGL toward its obligations in this regard. We hope JGL will continue this practice of excellence in regard to sustainability," reads the report of the Management Board of HR BCSD.
