Members of Academicus Visit JGL

On 9 April 2024, Academicus, the club of retired professors from the University of Rijeka, visited our company. They engaged in discussions with Ivo Usmiani, MPharm, President of the JGL Board of Directors, as part of their mission to facilitate intergenerational cooperation and knowledge transfer, allowing retired professors to remain active members of the academic community. In addition to the professors, students from the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Pharmacy also attended the event.

“Academicus is the first club of retired professors whose activities aim to influence the transformation of the university into an age-inclusive community and which shapes its fundamental value statements in accordance with the new ageing paradigm. Our vision is to be the leading voice of retired University of Rijeka professors who contribute to the welfare of their members and make a lasting legacy for future generations. It is an honour and a tremendous pleasure to be hosted by you and to have the opportunity to hear the inspiring story of a visionary leader, the driving force behind JGL,” emphasised Jasna Krstović, PhD, President of Academicus, in her introduction.

During a dynamic discussion, Ivo Usmiani shared his extensive professional journey with the audience, starting from his studies at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Zagreb, his first business experiences, to the establishment of a laboratory within a healthcare institution alongside a pharmacy chain for the production of galenic and magistral preparations. He also delved into the challenges of managing an international pharmaceutical company and the key factors that have driven the impressive growth and development of JGL over the past three decades.

“I firmly believe that the company’s strength primarily stems from the intellectual prowess of its employees. People are JGL’s driving force, making a difference and securing victory in a competitive market. That is the reason behind our exceptional commitment to nurturing the JGL culture and upholding the values of accountability, respect, unity, and sustainability. The wealth of diversity stemming from our international network and presence is a significant asset. It is that which makes us strong, resilient, and successful,” emphasised Usmiani, adding that the paramount task in both business and life is to connect with people and inspire them to deliver their utmost.

The discussion was moderated by Bruno Grbac, PhD, professor emeritus, who concluded on behalf of all participants:

“You have effectively supported and validated our thesis that Ivo Usmiani is indeed a visionary. We are grateful for the opportunity to glean insights from your experiences, knowledge, and remarkable accomplishments. Through meetings like these, we promote the concept of an Age-Friendly University and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Following the discussion, a guided tour of our sterile production facilities, research and development and quality control laboratories, including the exhibit of the JGL Pharmacy Museum within the JGL Pharma Valley complex, was arranged.
