One of the most prestigious European journals on gynaecology, the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, recently published an article titled "Efficacy of orally applied probiotic capsules for bacterial vaginosis and other vaginal infections: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study."The authors of this study are JGL's very own Alenka Jajac Knez, Vedrana Despot Štefanović and Vedrana Kuzmić Vrbanović, together with dr. Goran Vujić from the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Considering that the study was based on the presentation of efficacy of the Lactogyn brand on women's intimate health, this definitely represents a professional international recognition of JGL's probiotic culture.
The decision to carry out a clinical study was made in 2007, when neither the expert public nor the consumers knew much about the use of probiotic cultures in the protection of women's intimate health. The idea stemmed from the desire to achieve the perception of Lactogyn as a serious product with clear effects.
- The Lactogyn oral probiotic culture is an excellent example of good selection of preparations in cooperation with clinicians, the education of clinicians about its importance, the actual implementation and, finally, scientific representation of its efficacy in recent literature. I am happy I could take part in all the steps from the very beginning. After JGL has successfully launched Lactogyn, the need for further scientific proof to solidify its position arose. The idea was to conduct a double blind placebo-controlled scientific study on the efficacy of Lactogyn on women's intimate health to prove this premise. The aim of the study was to use a sample of women from Croatia and the region to confirm the efficacy of Lactogyn in otherwise healthy women with bacterial vaginosis compared to the placebo group. Many gynaecologists, cytologists and microbiologists cooperated with JGL's employees in collecting the data required under the study design. The processing of the large volume of data corroborated Lactogyn's clinical efficacy, so the final results of the study were presented at all major Croatian conferences of gynaecologists and obstetricians. The quality of the study is further proven by the fact that it was accepted by the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology with only minor corrections. I believe that the publication of this work is only the starting point for further efforts taken towards scientific confirmation of the efficacy of both oral and new vaginal probiotic cultures in the protection of vaginal flora, and I am especially excited to see JGL contribute to that, says co-author Goran Vujić, MD, PhD.
